A woman's car buying guide

Buying a car is an intimidating process fraught with negotiation, confrontation and too many blasted warranty choices. It's especially scary when you know the only thing you really care about is whether or not the car has heated seats and comes in Sapphire Blue. Never fear! If you follow these steps, you'll be on your way to finding the perfect car and the perfect deal.

1. Grab a friend and go shopping!
Go for a test drive. Look for the car that's comfortable, convenient and meets your specific needs. Taking a friend along is smart for several reasons. There is safety in numbers. You will never be alone on the road (let alone locked in a car!) with a complete stranger. Plus, you can let your friend take a whirl behind the wheel and you'll get to be a passenger too. It'll give you a chance to play with all the bells and whistles while you're not driving.

2. Do your homework.
Visit the manufacturer's website to find out specs, options and pricing details about your car. Read customer reviews to get a real-life perspective on the realities of driving every day. Research pricing, trade-in values and financing options using resources like Consumer Reports magazine, Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) and online mortgage calculators. Once you know what you're facing financially, try to obtain your financing through non-dealership sources like a bank or credit union. You may find lower interest rates and/or more flexible terms. Plus, you'll have the upper hand when you are ready to negotiate because you're essentially a sure thing, money in the bank.

3. Find the right dealer.
Search online for local dealers with the right inventory. If they don't have the exact car you're looking for, call anyway and make an appointment. Dealerships will usually locate your vehicle and have it transferred in from another dealership in advance. Ask about current sales incentives like free oil changes, extended warranties or gasoline vouchers. If you plan to use the dealership's service department for maintenance and warranty work, consider the convenience of location when choosing your dealer. Who wants to drive 45 miles for a free oil change?

Buying a car can be empowering if you know what you want, what it's worth and what you're willing to pay. Remember that knowledge is power and confidence is key. Remember, you're in charge! If you're patient and prepared to walk away, you'll have nothing to lose by asking for everything that you want. Good luck!
