A few months ago I had this discussion with my father. We came to the conclusion that a Desktop was much better than a Laptop for a number of reasons:
1. Desktops have much more space than a Laptop. Ever since I was a small child I played computer games and I still do. The requirement at the time was about 32MB, but now they require ten times more and increasing with the new HD generation. A Laptop cannot store nearly as much. Sure people tell you that you can plug such and such portable memory stick with more memory space. This does not really work In this is so useless that it makes the computer really slow down, leaving you staring at a blank screen waiting for endless hours for something to happen.
2. A Desktop is much more comfortable. The screen in a Laptop is small and trying to see how last nights party photos came out is a rather painful chore for the eyes. A Desktop however can have larger screens and normally it has built in options to make this a more comfortable and enjoyable task.
3. Desktops have a longer life. A Desktop can be upgraded many times and it could be half a decade before you needed to buy a new one. With a Laptop you need to upgrade every two or three years. On average you lose 730 days of not having to spend a few thousand bucks in a new PC. If budget is your concern a Desktop is of better option.
En conclusion, I could go on for ages explaining the advantages of a Desktop. A Laptop may look like an ideal choice for a first time buyer but technology has not advanced enough for it to be so. For the normal student 21st user, chances are it'll be a waste of his/her money. Unless you used a PC only for work and e-mail a Desktop is your number 1 choice for gaming, music, short film making or whatever multimedia purpose you use it for.
