The question that keeps many pet owners at bay when getting fish: Are fish high maintenance pets?

It depends on which type of fish you get. for example, if you get a goldfish, they require very little maintenance; cleaning the tank every week to two weeks and a feeding every day. Caring for a goldfish should be a piece of cake.

If you get a fish such as a figure-eight puffer, it may require lots of maintenance. For a fish such as this, you will need a large aquarium (20 gallons or bigger compared to a goldfish bowl for goldfish), and cleaning and taking care of a tank this size requires much more effort. This type of fish is also sensitive to the water, and you will have to maintain pH balance along with temperature of the water. This can make certain types of fish VERY high maintenance.

Another thing that can make fish high maintenance could be the amount of fish you have in your tank. Let's say you have fifty fish in a 50 gallon tank. It would be a lot harder to care for all of them, clean the tank, feed all of them, and keep the tank free of diseases than it would be to do all that for five fish in a five to ten gallon.

The answer to this question really depends on which type and how many fish you have to decide if your fish are high maintenance or not.
