I have just read on Yahoo that Paris Hilton is out of jail after five days, albeit for health reasons apparently. Five days! What convicted crime lands you five days in prison!? I mean you can be locked up for the night for bad behavior or some drunken rioting or whatever. I know that she is to now get 40 days home confinement. Some punishment that is, locked in a million dollar mansion for 40 days!
My problem is that I think this whole thing is a farce and joke. I mean its basically saying to the public of America, that there's a completely different set of laws used for dealing with criminal offenses, committed by a celebrity with a 30 to 50 million dollar inheritance and world wide fame.
I mean how often does any normal person get off as lightly as she has, with her record and behavior? Surely there are hospitals in prison that can take care of any medical problems. (If indeed it is really a medical problem and not just a ruse pulled by the attorney to get her out of prison).
I don't argue the length of the sentence in the first instance, which was to be 45 days. I think that is long enough to make anyone think seriously about the crime they have committed even if it was drink driving or driving with out a license.
But what was the point of cutting the jail time to 23 days inside a special unit for people with disabilities? To me it stinks of nursemaiding celebrities to the point where there not really benefiting from prison in the way that everyone else is forced to by the system.
I'm not saying throw them in the block with the majority of the prisoners, because obviously there is an unnatural amount of attention created by a celebrity. Therefore there will be people looking to harm a celebrity because of envy or they that are trying to boost their reputation in prison.
What is 40 days home confinement to someone like Paris Hilton? She can get all sorts of entertainment and party friends summoned to her door. Sipping cocktails and just generally living like someone staying in a Hilton hotel? Well thats certainly going to make her learn her lesson!
No, she should be locked up in the same manner the rest of us would be. Don't do the crime if you can't to the time! Doesn't apply to the rich and famous though does it.
