The bottom line is that the premium gas is a better grade of gasoline. That is why they charge more for it.
Is regular grade just as good for "your" car, well that is a tough question to answer because all of our cars are different. I have a BMW and the manufacturer calls for a minimum of 91 octane so the engine won't knock. A new BMW may be able to get away with using the 89 octane because there is less wear on the engine and it wont knock even with the lower octane. Now if you put the regular or 87 octane in a Ford Ranger, I don't think the engine will knock... But putting the 93 octane in will give you a little more performance...
In conclusion, if your car calls for the good stuff, use it! There is a reason the manufacturer said the car needs it. If the car does not call for it, save yourself the $5.00 a tank and use the regular, the small performance boost is not worth the money.
