Short stories: Police

red light indicated to him that his camera was indeed working and recording everything. In front of the camera, he reiterated his reason for stopping the gentleman's car and asked the gentleman to confirm that he had been driving for a long spell, which he did. As he checked the mans driver license and documents, he struck up a conversation with the gentleman. They talked about the mans profession, how he is a chef on a cruise line for fun. They talked about the man attending college in West Virginia, which was coincidentally the same college Bill's father attended.

Throughout the conversation he noticed that the man seemed even more nervous but, again: dismissed it. It was completely uncharacteristic of Bill to dismiss shaky hands, a stammering voice, and other nervous habits. Typically, on the first sign of nervousness, the wheels in Bill's mind go into overdrive. Like a hunter seeing his prey, the adrenaline flows; that sudden rush being addictive. Not this time, this time Bill just wanted to get the stop over with and go back to being glum, and depressed.

At some point in the conversation, Bill heard that voice again "ask the questions". He reasoned within himself that there was little or no chance this elderly gentleman would have anything to do with narcotics. Then like a screaming banshee "ASK THE QUESTIONS!". The questions were typical from Bill: inquiring as to the drivers plans; where he had been, where he was going. There were other open-ended questions Bill had learned to ask that would tell more about what the person was doing, but he didn't feel like asking those questions, until, that voice came again, only this time hitting him like a brick.

So, he gave into the voice. He asked the questions. Something happened in that moment, Bill remembered the odor coming from the vehicle, the nervousness, the answers to the questions. It all added up to one thing: dope. As odd as it seemed, all the training and experience added up and there was no denying it. He'd seen odder circumstances like the time he arrested a minister for possession of crack cocaine and soliciting a prostitute.

Bill then asked the man for consent to search his vehicle. He knew he didn't need consent from the gentleman based on the questions and the odor of Marijuana, but wanted to catch it all on tape for the lawyers to haggle over. The gentleman outright refused to allow him to search the vehicle. The man became agitated and even more nervous. He seemed more nervous than the expression
