With dozens of assignments piling up, course-loads that leave students with no free time and stress from all angles of life, it's not surprising that weight issues can become prevalent and even compound stress.
Traditionally, this combination is most prominent in freshmen, hence the term "Freshman 15," referring to the 15 pounds that freshmen are believed to typically put on in their first year.
There are a variety of diets that claim to be the most successful. Some of them are crash diets like the 48-Hour Hollywood Diet, or the Lemonade Diet, where you only eat or drink one thing for a few days until you shed pounds very quickly. However, you gain it back rapidly as soon as the diet ends.
For a while, Atkins was the most popular diet, but critics warned against its potential side effects because of its demand for high protein.
The South Beach Diet, similar to Atkins, moves away from a heavy protein basis and may be more effective and healthier on a long-term scale.
First know this: when you lose weight, you don't lose fat cells. They only get smaller. The thing is, once fat cells are created, they don't die very easily. In fact, they can often be enlarged very easily once poor eating habits are resumed.
If a person maintains a healthy diet, it is possible to kill the buggers, which makes it easier to maintain a lower weight. However, the death of the fat cells may take years.
The South Beach Diet is divided into three phases, each one longer than the last, and is meant to help dieters maintain healthy eating habits throughout life. Each phase allows you to eat different kinds of food, the first one being most strict and the third being the least rigid.
The first phase of South Beach lasts for two weeks. During this phase, the food you are allowed to eat is very limited, and the restrictions are meant to purify the body and help you resist cravings for unhealthy food. All starches, such as anything made with wheat, flour or potatoes are banned, as are all sugars, natural and processed.
This means no fruit for two weeks. Basically, limited amounts of low-fat proteins and most vegetables are supported, except corn and carrots. Dairy and cream are not allowed, but cheese is fine.
During this time, most people experience radical weight-loss - up to 15 pounds.
The second phase, which can last as long as desired if the third phase is believed to be too liberal, reintroduces fruits, with several exceptions, and any products that are 100 percent wheat. All consumption
