I watch everyone I come in contact with. I write notes on anything I can find. For example, I would jot down whatever characteristics, voice inflections or dialect, personal appearance, what you personally take from the first impression, etc. I take these and for each one I have, I visualize them in a scenario and play out how they would respond. Basically, I audition my characters for whatever I am writing. In some ways, your own personality may show through in your characters, but you have to try to think like this other person you have created, not yourself. Like an actor, while you are writing, put yourself into that role. Not you, someone completely different, and let the character be him or herself. Another good exercise is to put one characteristic, quality, or flaw on post it notes. (one per note) I would put them all up on a wall or board next to your writing area. Sometimes when you need inspiration, just pluck one off and see what it sparks. Good Luck!
