What a horrendous season the Brewers had last year. It's pretty hard to take to put a positive spin on a season that results in a 75 win 87 losses, but manager Ned Yost is doing his best.
He feels that at least some of the younger players know what it is to face adversity and will be that much better prepared for what comes in the 2007 season.
So far, so good as the Brewers sit on top of the divisions standings. Indications are that the win-loss ratio will be far improved from last season.
One of the biggest improvements the Brewers made for this year was inserting Francisco Cordero into the closer role. He is replacing Derrick Turnbow who had an extremely disappointing second half of the season last year.
Already Cordero is among the top closers in the league with no signs of slowing down.
The main difference he is making to the team is that now they are winning the close games. A closer is instrumental in winning the one and two run games.
Last year the Brewers won nine and lost 25 games that were decided by one or two runs.
If Francisco Cordero can stay healthy, he might just help reverse that stat.
Just do the math. It would be huge to win closer to 25 and lose 9 of the close games.
Those are the type of numbers that can lead to the playoffs and better yet, the world series.
That is how important a great closer is.
