I recently watched the movie 'The Constant Gardener'. The movie was shot and filmed in my homeland country, Kenya - a third world country which I love with every part of my being. The movie is basically about the powerful and wealthy drug companies that use the poor to test their new drugs.
Even though the movie is based on fiction, it clearly depicts what happens in Africa. How inhumane have we become that we can attach monetary value to human life.
I recently read on the News Week website that some contact lens cleaning solutions are being pulled off the shelves of stores in the United States.
The website explains that prolonged, continuous use of one these cleaning solutions could result in blindness. You can imagine my shock as this is the brand that I use. Not suprisingly though, it is still being sold in many pharmacies in Nairobi.
Another of the cleaning solutions mentioned was pulled out of the market approximately two years ago and I can still see it sitting on the shelves of some pharmacies.
We need stricter rules to ensure that our people are protected. Since when did we become so cheap a dumping ground?
