I love the ridiculous nature of this debate.. Equal rights for all.. but they can't have what we have..
Religion talk about marriage as something sacred between a man and a woman and God as a bond forever and hence shouldn't be fouled by 'them homosexuals' because the semantics of the statement mean that only hetrosexual couples are entitled... but we all know in the main most married couples don't stand up to all the criteria today. How many marriages are performed in the UK these days? And how many of the couples are religious? How many are still together?
The actual meaning of marriage has changed in today's society.. It now stands for proclaiming your undying love (which you hope to be true at this point in time) for your dearly beloved.. Your dedication to each other (for as long as you both see fit; possibly nothing more than a legal get-together because it's better for both parties with regards to taxes.
As such why shouldn't same-sex couples be allowed the same rights? They are no more likely to split up nor less able to love one another forever and so could be allowed to be recongised under the same titled partnership as th rest of us - as a married couple.
I do respect that for the Chrisitan religous types, the semantics of marriage mean that marriage has to be the unity of the husband, the wife and jesus mean they can opt out on this one. And if you're into that sort of thing hats off to you- you're entitled to your opinion.
But if this applies to homosexual couples than surely the rest of us who don't see a threesome with the Lord as part of our chenanigans part of our marriage shouldn't be able to legally be together under the same title? A marriage not betwen a man and a woman OR every couple where one or more of the party does't believe in God (or obviously both of the above)should be legally considered civil partners.. NOT husband and wife.
As such, either the rules need to be picked with a fine toothcomb and marriage be a priviledge only for the religious and hetrosexual, or everyone shoudl be entitled to the marriage ceremony.
