The future of advertising is now the past of advertising. With households filling up the aisles of Best Buy and their local computer stores waiting in line to buy a bigger DVR, commercials as we know it will soon Rest In Peace and old shelved methods of advertising will be brought back from the grave.
Did your parents ever talk about product placement or television shows being sponsored by a company pushing their product? Well we are about to come full circle and back to the world of Twinkies sponsoring our latest episode of 24. Are you a good product placement spotter? Have you noticed a huge increase in branded products that your favorite sitcom character is using or consuming... well you should have. With 40% of homes skipping through commercials, companies aren't interested in paying for a 30 or 60 seconds spot anymore, or at least not for the same price. However, if Jack Bauer like Pepsi now, then so do I.
The pendulum is now swinging back across the clock's face, and it will only be a matter of time before almost all commercial advertising as we know it is no more.
Another interesting concept to watch is to see how advertising happens once the majority of people start watching their TV over the internet and not on standard methods like cable and satellite as they do now.
