Mount Vernon Virgina is a showcase of George Washington's estate and gardens. President Washington and his wife are both buried on the grounds here. Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in the country. Mount Vernon is open 7 days a week and is open every day of the year, including Christmas and other holidays. The 45-acres offer a spectacular view of the Potomac River for all to enjoy.
You can tour the main house and the other building on the grounds which include a slave quarters and greenhouse. There are 4 hiking trails you can enjoy the lush green surrounding of the gardens. There are many artifacts of the former president and his life at the estates. You can enjoy many of the historical and archaeological pieces due to their preservation and the hard work of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association which purchased the land in 1858 and have been working independently to fund the grounds and all the programs ever since.
While at Mount Vernon you can enjoy a candlelit dinner, a lunch meal or a light snack at the Mount Vernon Inn. You can purchase reproduction furniture like what is at Mount Vernon and other gifts and souvenirs in the gift store. It is a great event for all ages and is truly a treat looking into the past at one of our founding fathers home and lifestyle. It has great historical significance to me to think of George Washington standing there, living here, reading here. It is so well preserved and maintained.
