The basic assumption underlying this debate is flawed.
It ignores the reality that this conflict, whether it be Iraq, Afghanistan, London or New York is global in nature. It is a battle of ideas that will stretch for generations.
This is a war. Pure and simple.
There is no negotiation possible. Someone MUST win this war. Anything less is defeat.
Defeat in this conflict does not bode well for the civilization we cherish and so many aspire for.
This generation of terrorists and in particular Islamo-fascists, who would hijack a religion to further their own twisted goals, of control and the submission of others to their will, are determined to impose their will on others.
There will be no election. No community involvement in decision. No discussion. It's their way or execution, plain and simple.
This cold blooded ideology cannot be allowed to plant even the smallest root in any corner of this earth if all are to enjoy freedom and personal liberty.
To de-couple this conflict, and fragment it into neat little packages, is naive beyond belief!
There are many nameless faces of courageous men and women who have given of themselves in this war, and then there are the tragic public faces, Nicholas Berg, Daniel Perle and many others who have paid the ultimate price in this brutal but necessary global conflict.
There were those who said don't confront the Nazis. Thanks God Almighty that there are some in the citadels of political power today that understand the far reaching consequences of this war.
