Benefits of playing video games

Aside from the obvious enjoyment and being a great pastime, distraction or just a never-ending entertainment source, there are a few other benefits that may not be so obvious.

1. Improved reflexes

If you play a lot of action filled games, you no doubt have noticed that your reflexes might be better than non-players'. The dire need in many games to response quickly to events have a certain effect on how the neurological system develops, and can result in small to large improvements in the reflex category. No doubt handy when you need to dodge a football or stabilize yourself when slipping on a slippery ground.

2. Improved coordination skills

Playing games that require not only fast, but precise actions too. And with the increase of the number of buttons on the hand controls, you need a lot of coordination skills to pull through the hardest combos and key press challenges many games present. These skills can also improve your keyboard type rate, guitar playing skills, piano playing skills, and anything else that requires some finger coordination to master.

It's actually been some research in this area on surgeons. The result was, not so surprisingly, that the surgeons who played video games on a regular basis was both more efficient and more precise during surgery, leading to better results, than their not-so-regular video game playing counterparts.

3. Higher brain functionality

Games challenge the mind more than body, but as the old monks use to say, mind controls body. Anyway, playing games with tricky puzzles and problem solving will increase the brain's ability to create solutions to problems at hand.

4. Increased social network

Although this might be more relevant to teenagers, there is that fact that a lot of people like playing games, and owning a video game console can get you some friends, if you can share, that is.
