Our society is teetering between two broad groups of people; those who want to live entirely online and those who aren't exactly sure what the internet, and its appeal, is just yet. This is why it is essential to have a print version of your newsletter. Generally, I would recommend you have an online version as well that you can email to your client base. The best-case scenario would be having an email version that comes with an attached PDF document to be printed if one so desires.
There is nothing truly rivaling paper yet. Reading something of considerable length on a computer monitor is uncomfortable and often inconvenient. Paper allows you to mark sections you find interesting, take the newsletter or article on the subway to work and, perhaps, leave it there to be picked up by a commuter on the next train. Talk about free marketing! I think everyone can agree that it's much easier on the eyes as well.
In the spirit of having your newsletter passed along to as many people as possible, email has some advantages. It can be easily forwarded by your clients to associates of theirs whom they feel would find it interesting. Conversely, it's quite easy to hit the delete key. Our inboxes are oversaturated, and paper is much harder to dismiss without giving it at least a cursory glance.
Although a print version of your newsletter will incur extra costs, you also have the opportunity of having it read by a larger audience. Making a PDF version of your print newsletter will give you an additional outlet at zero cost to you. There is no real reason not to have both.
