Did you know?
The cost of an ad during the Super Bowl is $2.3Million. That's $77,000 per second!
The fans spend more than $50 million on food on Super Bowl weekend.
The Vince Lombard Trophy costs $12,000.
The Super Bowl rings cost $5,000 per ring, and the league will pay for 150 of them. The league will also buy rings for the loosing team, but they will only cost half as much.
The players if the winning Super Bowl team earns at least $73,000 for the game. The players of the loosing team receive $38,000.
141.4 million watched the Super Bowl last year. How many of those were solely for the commercials?
With the Super Bowl right around the corner (February 4th), we find ourselves excited about who is going to be there. Or if you are like me, you are more interested in the party and the commercials. Either way, we find ourselves looking forward to the day when we can throw a Super Bowl Party, or spending the day watching our favorite television show that is playing for 7-8 hours straight. With as much time and energy put into this day, do we ever stop to think about how glorified and worshiped this day is, even though half of us will not remember who won (who won last year by the way?).
These stats show how much time, energy and money we put into this one day (and it is not even a national holiday), yet we as Christians find ourselves getting wrapped up into these festivities with good intentions in mind (which are often forgotten by the end of the game if not careful). But Christ tells us in Matthew that "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." (6:24, also Luke 16:13). While the Super Bowl and all of its surrounding festivities are not bad things, advertisers are willing to pay the $2.3 million to get our attention, and we are willing to notice. With as much time and money as we put into events like the Super Bowl, the question will come down to which God do we serve?
