Safety at sea basics

It's important that someone reliable knows your plans for your time at sea. For instance the course you plan to sail and how long you expect to be gone. At least that way, there will be a starting point in the event of a search being initiated.

Some other important points:

-Be sure to have sufficient food and water to last for the duration of your trip, with some extra in case of emergency.

-A flare gun is a must in the event you are in distress and need to signal for help such as aircraft or another boat.

-Ensure that you have clothing stowed away for all types of weather conditions. Better to err on the side of caution.

-Be sure everyone on board is aware of what is expected of them and that they are all wearing life jackets.

-Stow all gear away properly to ensure that there are no accidents caused by tripping or getting clothing snagged in gear.

-It's extremely important to have the proper footwear. Deck shoes are a must because on their muli-directional soles. If you are anticipating cooler conditions, be sure to have sailing boots.
