The irony about this false dilemma is that neither category, cowboy or metro, has anything to do with who the guy is, and everything to do with who the guy wants you to think he is.
There is a guy who is neither cowboy nor metro. He is confident in himself, his abilities, his strengths, and even his flaws. He knows that he's made mistakes in his life, but he's not ashamed of them. He knows that there are things about him that might be perceived as too manly or not manly enough, but that is who he is, so he wants you to know about those things, so that you can judge him on merits that are actually his own. He wants to look presentable and not smell bad, but he doesn't really care if his shirt doesn't match his pants, or if the arrangement of his living room furniture isn't feng shui. He is masculine, but in a subtle, unassuming way, that makes you respect his manliness all the more for the fact that he doesn't feel the need to go to any great lengths to assert it.
This is the man women want. Most of us will date the cowboy, most of us will date the metro, some of us will date the inexplicable man who is both cowboy and metro (if you don't believe that this is possible, let me introduce you to my ex). However, when all is said and done, we want the man who doesn't warrant a label, because he is neither here nor there, he just IS.
