I've owned a few computers over the years, all but one of them built myself. When purchasing a desktop computer, it is possible to choose only the features you need in order to save costs; its also possible to spend the most amount of money on a certain part in order to get the best.
Sure, a desktop computer does have a larger footprint than a laptop, but that is slowly changing. The monitors that once took up half a desk are now being replaced by ones the same width as those used in laptops. Quality of the picture is still an issue though, as CRT monitors(the big kind that takes up most of the desk) still have the better quality, especially when the action is fast-paced, as in a movie or a game.
Power is an issue as well. If you use your computer for video creation, trying to work on a laptop takes much longer than a desktop of the same price range. Desktop computers have more power.
As technology keeps changing, it isn't that hard to have your computer change to keep up the pace, unless its a laptop. Desktop computers have a system of standards, one part from one company would work just as easily as a part from another company. Unfortunately, with laptop computers, that is not the case. If an upgrade is needed, it must be obtained through the original manufacturer, hopefully who still has it available.
If you're considering a new computer, and need to choose between a Desktop computer and a laptop, the choice is really about your needs and preferences. If you need processing power and will want to keep the same machine for a few years, then a desktop computer is probably the right choice for you.
