Are we better off without religion

The answer to this is simply no. Mankind has a need, a drive, to conform. This need, along with the need to discover truth and explain mysteries, forces us to religion. We will always have organized religion. Even if every single religion we have today somehow dies off, which is doubtful, we will always have some sort of organized religious habit. If you doubt this just look at the so-called "anti-religious" philosophies of atheism and agnosticism. Even people who have these ideals organize themselves within coherent religious banners, such as Humanism or non-theistic Unitarianism .

Although many of the organized religions are at the center of world conflicts around the globe, religion may not necessarily be the only cause for this. Humans tend to conform themselves to certain ideals and philosophies, even if it pits them against another set of people. An example of this would be patriotism. Undying Patriotism, which is observed in almost every industrialized nation, causes a sense of superiorly, by some people, to people of other nations. This shows us that religion may only be one method of a sub-conscious habit of humans to loyally attach themselves to an organized philosophy.

Organized religion is a social affair for us. It allows us to band together and thrive, a inherent need for humans. Even though organized religion is destructive, it would probably more destructive, if even possible, to not have some form of organized religion. Our social structure may break down, or more likely, we would unite more strongly under another social banner instead of religion. So the question should not be whether or not we would be better off without religion, but rather if such a thing could even be possible.
