crashes, and top of the list as an example why we should ban cell phones, found two elderly ladies driving behind a trailer on the motorway in rapidly building traffic. Approximately one mile behind them and doing the national speed limit was an Arctic lorry and a full load of washing machines. As he neared the slowing traffic the driver took his eye off the road to answer his bosses call on his cell.
He was consumed in getting to the mobile buried under paperwork on the passenger seat, flipping it open, and answering it, before it rang off. His reaction when he finally saw that the traffic in front of him was stationary, was very quick, but it was not enough to stop his rig. By the time the lorry driver hit the old ladies car he had had managed to slam on his brakes, locking the wheels into skid. The lorry was just too heavy to stop and smashed into the old ladies car like it was melted butter. The cars length was reduced from its normal 10feet into a concertinaed 4feet. Both the ladies in the car died instantly and were not recognizable to their own families.
That was just one tragic incident, and there were many that finally swayed our government to action.
Anyone caught using a mobile while in the driving seat of a vehicle, can now automatically be fined and lose their license to drive.
New Blue-tooth headsets with voice activated dialling seems to be the latest craze.
Be careful out there.
