Firstly you have to want to give up. Will power is the most important factor in being able to stop. I personally managed to give up, after years of trying, when I found out I was pregnant. It gave me that extra reason for wanting to stop. The nausea helped a lot as it meant I didn't crave as much. This said, I don't recommend getting pregnant just to stop smoking!
Other ways which helped me over the years were: changing routine. If you go the the same places it's normal to associate smoking with the place. For example I used to go to the same bar most friday nights. On arriving I would automatically order a drink and light up because that's what I always did. By going somewhere new you break the routine and it's therefore easier not to smoke.
Try cutting down first. If you smoke 10 a day try to cut down to 5 a day. The less you smoke the easier it will be to stop completely. Going "cold turkey" rarely works.
Also try substituting smoking with something else. When you would normally smoke eat a sweet (or something else that is easy to always have with you).
Exercise regularly and eat healthy. If you feel healthier your body will feel the difference and the 'wanting' to smoke will lessen.
Do not try to give up during a stressful time period eg. after a break up, during the preparation for a wedding, moving house etcc...
