Great over the counter remedy for nausea/vomiting
Nausea and vomiting are two of the most miserable symptoms a human being can endure. Yet many medications for these symptoms leave you feeling sluggish and sedated. But there is a simple over the counter medication that has virtually no side effects.
This is an over the counter remedy that usually works if you're persistent. Basically you need to take it every 15 minutes until the nausea subsides. Even if you throw it up the first time, you keep taking it.
This remedy is called Emetrol. There is a generic brand that is cheaper, and usually for sale sitting right beside the brandname emetrol on the pharmacy shelf.
Emetrol is a syrup (about the consistency of non-diluted soft drink syrup) made of several sugars. The lemon flavor is disgusting, but the Cherry is tolerable.
And again, you take it every 15 minutes until the nausea subsides. It is recommended that you take no fluids until 15 minutes after the last dose.
How does Emetrol work? My understanding if that the reason it works is that Emetrol changes the pH in the stomach.
I have used it aggressively for myself and have recommended it for other adults with no adverse effects. I would assume that the only patient population that might have problems with it would be diabetics.
With my children,I am usually pretty conservative about how I use Emetrol. Even though it is supposed to be innocuous, recently I gave my daughter one dose which helped some. Then I waited until she felt worse again before I gave her another dose.
Interestingly, I find that few doctors are even aware that Emetrol exists. The ones that know about it seem to have had good experience with it. As a consumer and a mom, I am always thankful to find safe, side-effect free options for my home medical cabinet.
Postscript: There is another remedy I often use for myself as an adult. I don't use it with my children because it contains an aspirin like salycilate component which could precipitate Reye's Syndrome in children. I make this a postscript because this falls into the 'old wives tale' category with no clinical evidence to back it up. Only annecdotal stories. And do I have stories myself. The remedy is good old pink peptobismol(or the generic brand). And for me it does what the tales tell. If I start taking it when a gastrointestinal bug is going through our family and /or when I first get symptoms, the symptoms go away. If I stop taking it as soon as I feel better, the symptoms come back on me. If I keep taking at least a couple teaspoons a day for about two or three days, then the symptoms do not return.
