Finding a few small white spots on your nails is no cause for alarm, in fact, the white spots will go away on their own as your nails grow out. You may have heard that white spots on your nails are a symptom of a calcium or zinc deficiency. Not true according to Dr. Andrew Weil, well known medical author and trusted health advisor.
White spots on your nails are most often caused by minor injuries at the base of your nail. Picture the white spots as minor "bruises" on your nail. Trouble is, the spots don't show up until a month or so after the injury. By that time, you probably won't even remember how it happened.
If you hit your nail with a hammer, you're sure to remember, and your nail is likely to be bruised and sore. White spots are caused my minor injuries like an over aggressive manicure or banging your finger on your car door. White spots often show up on a jogger's toenails. The solution to that one is easy. Buy a new pair of shoes that fit properly.
If you wear artificial nails, the white spots could be an allergic reaction. Be careful when you apply acrylic nails. Too much pressure can injure the nail bed and show up as white spots when you remove the artificial nails.
If you notice a sudden change in the appearance of your nails, or you're simply concerned about nail health, a visit to your dermatologist can uncover a serious health issue and ease your mind. Most times, the white spots are nothing to worry about and will disappear in time as your nails grow out.
