One of the biggest mistakes for lighting in a video production is not having enough light. It is always good to make sure you have your 3-point lighting set up properly with a key - fill - back light structure.
Many beginning film makers will set the mood with some dark lighting because they really enjoy the way it appears through their viewfinder. Cameras don't like low light situations though. They need light in order to record a true image onto either film or digital tape.
The reality is that if you are working inside of a digital format, you will have the opportunity to darken the picture in post production. Lightening the picture because you lit your set too much will cause unwanted effects to the final product such as glares and over saturation of color.
To avoid one of the biggest mistakes in video production lighting I suggest making things are little brighter than you need. That little tip will save you a big headache down the road.
Good luck!
