There are so many great hiking trails in Colorado, and all of them have unique and spectacular views. One of the most diverse areas is Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas.
For starters, visit Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. There is a fantastic new visitor's center with great views of the rock formations. Hike through the park where you find yourself surrounded by enormous rock formations. If you are more daring, you can even try your hand at some rock climbing.
Another nice trail to hike in Colorado Springs is the Red Rock Canyon. This is not a real difficult trail, and there are some small rock formations and nice meadows. The deer in this area are abundant and chances are you will see quite a few on your hike. This is also a friendly trail for people with kids.
Next, head west on Highway 24 toward Woodland Park. On the way, stop in Waldo Canyon and take another hike. This trail takes you up to the rim of the canyon that forms Ute Pass. This is a little steeper hike, and there are actually a lot of stairs. But once you get to the top, the view is amazing. You can see part of the City of Colorado Springs and the canyon below is beautiful.
There are many different trails you can take to hike up Pikes Peak. If you want beauty this is where it lies. On these trails you go through peaceful mountain meadows with wildflowers. Photo opportunities are abundant. But make sure you take it slow if you aren't accustomed to the altitude. Neighbors in this area are rare, but unfortunately so is oxygen.
In Woodland Park you can hike through Pike National Forest, check out Rampart Reservoir, or just take a leisurely stroll north of town to Manitou Lake on a paved trail.
If you continue west through Divide and towards Florissant, you can hike through the Florissant Fossil Beds. Here, you can see wildlife, wildflowers, and even some fossilized trees. There is a visitor center and gift shop. You can even go on a guided hike to help enhance your experience.
When in Divide, you can head south on Highway 67 towards Cripple Creek. Stop at Mueller State Park. There are great trails and campgrounds there. If you go in the fall of the year, make sure you take the Elk Bugling Tour. When the elk are in the rut, you can sit and hear the sound of their majestic bugles.
There are many fabulous trails to hike in Colorado. Every one will leave you breathless (literally). These are the trails that I have known and enjoyed. Make sure you bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and the camera. And be ready to leave your heart behind!
