Elephants and their complex social behaviors

Elephants complex social behavior is evidence in their extensive communication
network and in their bond groups or herd. They develop close ties to those in the
group much like we humans do.
Each elephant has it's own personality. Some are popular and others are not, sounds
like high school, doesn't it? The Matriarch, or female leader, has the most power
over the group.
There are four levels of social organization involving the elephants. There is
the family unit, bond groups, clans and males. Each succeeding group has it's
own sets of leaders. Thus further proof of the complex social behaviors of these
animals.
Elephants communication tactics are complicated as well. They use social, survival
and mating signals which all vary. They use visual and chemical signals as well.
The need for such communication is great because of who they see and meet each day.
Many wonder if it is because they have such a large brain that they can react
this way socially.
