Deciding if a business degree is right for you

There are three things to think about when deciding whether to pursue a degree in business: your motivation, disposition, and underlying interests.

The most important consideration is to look deeply and honestly at what your motivation is. Many people think that just by having a degree, their resume will become more interesting to prospective employers, and more competitive in the field.

This is not a good reason to seek a degree in business. On the one hand, you can review the list of millionaires in this country and find that many of them have no degree at all. On the other hand, you can also look at the number of people who don't have what they would consider a great job, or great pay and find that many of them do have degrees.

If you're motivation to get a degree is because you genuinely want to learn, then you should pursue educational opportunities. If you are deeply curious about how the business world works, and how businesses unfold and evolve in the marketplace, then a business degree is for you.

The next consideration, your disposition, has to be in alignment with your motivation. Are you the kind of person who is set in your opinions, and makes a decision without looking for additional information? If you are, then you might find that you are wasting your time and money on a degree. Do you follow through with commitments, or do you quickly lose interest? If you have a short attention span, then seeking a degree might not be a valuable experience.

If you are a hard worker, good at juggling responsibilities, and are consistent in your goal seeking activities, then seeking a degree can be a very rewarding experience.

Finally, in deciding if a degree in Business is the right major, you should think about what your end goals are. Many young people who make a poor choice of picking business as a major, either think it's easier than other majors are, or don't know what their interests are, so just pick business. Neither of these reasons is very good. Business degrees are not necessarily easier than other majors are. If it's a matter of indecision, then exploring a Liberal Arts program might be a better choice.

If you are genuinely interested in the business world, have an entrepreneurial spirit, get excited by the idea of working for a large corporation, or have specific goals related to particular kinds of businesses, then a degree in business is a good idea.

When you make your final decision about whether to get a business degree, you should come to appreciate learning for learning's sake. Many employers value prospective employees with degrees because they can expect a higher order of thinking and communicating from them. In order for your degree to be worthwhile, you should pursue it wholeheartedly- go at it with everything you've got. Think of it as the investment that it is, and it will pay off.
