Valerian root has been used for centuries as a muscle relaxer, for anxiety relief, and as a sleep aid. It can also be used to ease menstrual and stomach cramps. After having taken Valerian, a hangover, or mild sleepiness the next day does not usually occur, unless mixed with other substances. It is available in pill, powder, and liquid forms. Valerian root tea can also be found.
As a sleep aid, whether you have trouble falling asleep initially or wake in the middle of the night, Valerian should be taken right before bedtime. Although it may provide quick relief for poor sleep, it may take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks to improve the sleep of people with severe insomnia.
For anxiety, you may start at three times per day, including before sleep. You may take more if you wish, but it is not recommended to take anything in excess.
Although side effects are rare, they include mild headache, upset stomach, insomnia, and abnormal heartbeats. The long-term effects of this and most other dietary supplements remains unknown.
Because of its calming effect, do not take Valerian root in conjunction with other relaxers, (natural or otherwise), or anti-depressants, unless under medical supervision. Do not drive a car or motorcycle after having taken Valerian root.
.
Valerian root is sold as a dietary supplement, not as a medicine, so be aware that FDA standards for this supplement are lax, at best. One should also be aware that dietary supplements may not be standardized in their manufacturing. As a result, their potency and quality, or any side effects they cause may differ from brand to brand or even in different batches from the same brand. For this reason, and because of the different forms in which it can be ingested, you shouldn't take dietary supplements such as this one based off of research alone.
