If you go about it the right way, it is easy to save money when eating at a fast-food restaurant. I speak from ill-gained experience, from both in front of and behind the counter.

*Always ask about discounts. There are often discounts for seniors, students, military, police, truckers and others.

*Order from the value menu. A person can usually eat well for a cheap price.

*Order smaller portions, especially drinks, since you can often get free refills.

*Ask for extras after you get your food. Many restaurants charge extra for extra sauces, dressing, etc., but the cashier usually won't take the time to ring in extra items if your meal is already delivered and paid for.

*Take advantage of freebies. Often you can get chips, crackers, etc., without paying for it.

*Request burger toppings on the side, then ask for salad dressing for your fries. Voila free salad.

Remember: just ask. Fast-food restaurants (or as they prefer to be called, "quick-service restaurants") are a fast-paced place to work, and if you look like you may interfere with their service times, the employees may give you whatever you ask for. And the worst they can do is tell you "no."
