Finding your ideal hobby

What would be the ideal hobby? Obviously, you want to enjoy it and find it relaxing, however, supplies and financial means can, and will, also come into play. If you are in a less populated area, certain hobbies could be unrealistic because supplies may not be readily available.

For example, in my case, I love to carve greenware vases and create artistic ceramics.

The store where I buy clay slip to pour my own greenware(this is the basic item before it has dried and been baked in the kiln) is fifty miles away, and I have to order it ahead of time because they don't keep it in stock. Usually this takes about two days. I can order the slip on the internet if I can wait longer, however, my collection of vase molds is limited due to space restrictions, so if I want a variety of greenware for carving I need to go to a ceramics store. The closest store I've found that sells greenware like this is three hours away (these are not something that can really be shipped as they break too easily). Needless to say, for someone with a full schedule, it is unrealistic in terms of time and expense to do these things on anything other than an occasional basis.

So, once you've weeded out what won't work, in thinking about what you would like to do, also keep in mind the ease of doing it, and pair that with the area in your home you might need to do it in... keeping it simple.

If you think you might enjoy rubberstamping, or building RC cars, or whatever else you might fancy, then ask yourself some questions. Do you need an area in the home for a table, or do you need an extra room? What types of tools will you need for your hobby? What are its storage needs? Again, look at the space you have available in a realistic fashion.

The simpler it is for you to access it and follow through with whatever your choice may be, the more you will do it, and the more enjoyable you will find it. Think about someone who knits. They usually will have a tote or basket sitting around with all their supplies in it, and when they sit down to watch tv, or just to relax, they will just pick up on their knitting. Having it easily accessible this way makes it something stress free, doesn't take a lot of extra time to fit in to your schedule, and makes clean-up work a snap.

All-in-all, it pays to think about your likes and dislikes, your habits and schedule, and the various things that will come into play to create a successful hobby, and making it something that you will be able to enjoy for years to come. In thinking about these things ahead of time, you will be able to find, and then to enjoy, the ideal hobby for you.
