Tip for including husbands during childbirth and delivery

Rarely will you find it mentioned that childbirth is almost as difficult for the Dad as it is for the Mom. In reality, it probably is worse for Dad as he sits by and tries to support his wife or significant other through the symptoms of pregnancy and the pain of delivery.

If we actually sit and think about it, Mom receives every bit of the attention and more that she deserves throughout her pregnancy. People are ready to dive in and help with anything that needs to be done. Most want to rub your belly, feel the baby kick and just plain turn you into the center of attention. Dad sits by and is left out, even though he did help to start the life growing in your belly.

Once you arrive at the hospital, you are the center of attention once again. The waiting room is probably full of anxious relatives, the nurses and doctors are only concerned with your pain, and Dad has his full attention on you and the monitors hooked to your belly.

Dad will hold your hand, help you breathe, smile through the insults you will most definitely throw at one point or another during labor. And mentally, he suffers that most painful fact of all. He can't help to take away your pain, or make it easier or do anything but be there for you. It is definitely one of the only times your husband or significant other will feel completely helpless and powerless.

Ladies, remember to talk to your partner throughout your pregnancy. Let him know that his support and his understanding is a necessity that you cannot live without. Make sure that he knows that you understand how he feels right now, and how he will feel as you go through the pain and ultimate satisfaction of giving birth to your baby. Above all, remind him how much you love him and need him even when he feels that he is not doing anything to help you.

Your relationship will be stronger, your rock will grow bigger and your partner will feel that he is a key factor in delivering a healthy, strong, and much loved baby into this world.
