What to do if you don't want to retire.

So the boss says it's time for you to relax, kick of your shoes, and don some sandals and Bermuda shorts, or replace that business suit with something more casual for your well deserved travels in the RV. But, you're just not ready for the rocking chair or the RV, and, from a financial standpoint, you'd like to keep those checks coming in for a while longer.

There are a few options that you may want to consider.

Consulting: What a wonderful word. Wouldn't it be nice to be your own boss, set your own schedule and only work on contracts that don't interfere with your travel plans?

Career Change: Okay. They say you've put as many years with the company as they'll let you. You're healthy and feel young and you want to keep working, but policy is policy and there's nothing you can do to change that (even though you may have been one of those who adopted the policy in the first place). Is there some other career path that interests you? Have you had a hobby that you can turn into a job? Maybe you want to go back to school and learn to do the job that you said you were going to do when you grew up.

Information Sharing: You've been doing a job all your life. You love the work. You know everything there is to know about it. Write a book. Far from the easy life it may appear to be to the novice writer, writing a full-length book can be quite time consuming and thought intensive. It'll keep you busy and give you the benefit of paying some royalties when it's published. Then, if you do a very good job, it may even provide some residual income for you heirs.
