As we progress in our knowledge of mankind we are beginning to recognize that there are several different types of intelligence. The most widely recognized form of intelligence is the intelligence quotent which looks at intellect and the ability to retain knowledge.
This type of intelligence has been concentrated on by many schools as we have believed that this would most benefit our children. Now, however, it has become apparent that there is a creative intelligence which needs to be given attention also.
Creativity and imagination are useful tools for both adults and children alike. Imagination can help us to see that we have many options available to us from which to choose. This can prevent us from entering a 'stuck' state where we don't know where to turn when we see no way forward.
As children grow they will come across many situations where if they are able to use their imagination to visualize all their options they will be more likely to make the right choices in their lives.
Imagination can be fostered in schools in the form of creative writing and in art classes. These subjects get the imagination stirred up and will ensure that children are making better use of different parts of their brains rather than just certain areas.
Reading material may also include fantasy books and time can be given to book groups where pupils discuss their own experience of reading the stories.
Drama classes can spark the imagination of pupils as well as being a great creative outlet for young minds and helping future talent to grow.
There is plenty of room for imagination in schools today, alongside other more intellectually based subjects.
