Have you ever opened a magazine or attended a fashion show and thought to yourself what it would be like to be part of that world? Could you do it?
Though you may not be cut out for the cover of Vogue or for the runways of Paris, there are many fields of the modeling world to explore today and ways to break in. Here are some solid career tips that have been tried and true by many in the industry and though it may not make most wealthy, it can be rewarding if the right steps are taken.
Your Portfolio:
Your portfolio is a personal statement of the work that you want to do, as well as a "bragging book" of work that you have done. Obviously it should show you at your best but it should also show you doing the kinds of work that you want to do. Your portfolio needs to be constantly updated and revised. Do NOT be led to believe that one photographer can photograph your entire portfolio. It should also show that you could work with different photographers. Any photographer that tries to sell you an entire "book" should raise a red flagrun, don't walk, from their studio.
Cost:
Cost is usually a concern. Getting started doesn't have to be expensive. TFP, Time for Prints, is a great way to acquire shots that can be used to start you on your way. There are agencies that can get you bookings that will cost you nothing. Again, if you are charged a fee for pictures for a "book," of one set of pictures, it's time to move on to the next potential photographer.
Goals:
You are promoting your talent as a product and to sell the product you must maintain professionalism. Look what can you do realistically in order to be successful and the types of assignments you would be both comfortable and suitable with.
Areas of Modeling:
Fashion - Modeling haute couture. Usually models are 59 and taller for these assignments.
Runway - Modeling, usually clothing, on a runway in front of a live audience. Models are also very tall.
Informal Modeling - Modeling clothing in stores for customers, usually during special events/promotions of new lines or brands. No runway is involved and height requirements are sometimes more lenient.
Sport - Modeling sportswear and outdoor clothing. Height usually varies here.
Casual - Modeling casual attire.
Plus Size - Models that are usually size 10 and over (though in some cases sizes 6 and 8 are used). These women vary in height from average to very tall, depending on the type of assignments that call for plus models. There are also plus petite models, ranging from 5'4-5'6,
