No, the Bible should not be used in swearing-in ceremonies and courtrooms. The Bible has its place, but there needs to be limits to its use.
Christians believe that the Bible is the word of God. And that's fine, they can believe whatever they want. However, Christianity is not the only religion in the world. There are thousands of religions in this world, so why should Christianity be the dominant one in our courtrooms and swearing-in ceremonies? And don't forget about the atheists and agnostics.
To only utilize the Bible in swearing-in ceremonies and courtrooms is, in my opinion, quite offensive to these different religious and non-religious groups. It is also quite pointless. After all, who's to say that an atheist who swears to tell the truth on a Bible actually will? To them, the Bible is nothing but a fairy tale.
The same goes for someone of another religion. While a Buddhist will probably not be offended by swearing on a Bible(they might, I'm just guessing), perhaps a Hindi would take it as an insult. Or someone who follows the teachings of Muhammad. And I know from personal experience that an atheist would probably find it fairly disconcerting.
What should be used in the Bible's place? How about we just swear to tell the truth period. Really, if people are going to lie then they're going to lie. No book of any kind is going to change that.
For those of you who think that the Bible should continue to be used in swearing-in ceremonies and courtrooms ask yourself something. How would you feel if another religious holy book was used in place of the Bible? Would you feel awkward swearing on that religious text?
Since Christianity is the dominate religion in many parts of the world, some Christians automatically believe that everybody thinks and feels like they do(or should). But not everyone is going to believe that they will burn in Hell for telling lies on a Bible.
And it's the same no matter what the religion is. Take Islam for example. If Americans started using the Koran instead of the Bible in courtrooms and swearing-in ceremonies then people would still lie. It doesn't matter what type of religious text you use, people are still going to lie.
The Bible should not be used for swearing-in ceremonies and courtrooms. Holy books have their place in churches and temples but that's about it.
