Kava's use and the risk of serious liver damage

Kava can be used as an aphrodisiac, a local anesthetic, an anti inflammatory agent, an anxiolytic, a narcotic and a sedative. Its most commonly used to treat anxiety, insomnia and for treatment of menopause symptoms. Kava can also help improve memory and concentration.

Kava is very helpful for a number of ailments but it is also a mild narcotic and should only be used with medical supervision. Consuming Kava on a daily basis is not recommended for longer than twenty five weeks. Kava when mixed with other medications can cause adverse affects. Kava should not be mixed with anticonvulsants, CSN depressants or antipsychotic medications. Also, pregnant women should not use Kava.

There is some controversy about whether or not Kava damages the liver. Some users have suffered from severe liver damage (toxins have been found to build up in the liver) that has been attributed to the use of Kava. At least twenty five cases of liver toxicity have been linked to the use of Kava (as reported on the national center for complimentary medicine and alternative medicine's website http://nccam.nih.gov/health/al erts/kava/). It is noted that liver damage is rare but that those at risk for liver problems or those who are taking drugs that affect the liver should speak with a health care professional before taking Kava.

As with most herbs and supplements large dosages and extended use can cause more damage than good so communicate with your doctor and only take recommended dosages.
