Yes, dodgeball should be allowed in schools; however, due to safety concerns and self-esteem issues, the Physical Education teacher should introduce the children to the game with some modifications in mind. For instance, rather than allow both competing teams to roam all over the gym floor, each side should understand that no one is allowed beyond their foul-line on their end of the floor when throwing at the other team; this should reduce the chances that someone may sustain a hard hit in the head or eyes at a close distance from an errant throw. Teachers should invoke a rule that states that anyone hitting above the chest is automatically ruled out. Teachers should also be aware of any potential animosities between students and warn them that excessively targeting one or two individuals will draw some consequences; same goes for anyone obviously bullying and/or belittling one of their peers, with tauts and/or repeated attempts to single one individual out for target practice. Where these rules can be enforced, the game of dodgeball could lead to some wonderful memories out on the gym floor. The idea of the game, ideally, is to have children build a sense of esprit d'corp, planning strategies together to outwit the other team and sharing laughter while evading the opponents throws. Teachers can use this opportunity to offer words of praise and encouragement to those kids who may not be athletically blessed, but are holding their own in the process; when children see adults praising these students it's easier for them to do the same. Play clean and fair and let the best team win.
