1. Make a budget. Decide before the holiday season begins that you may not spend more money on gifts than you have. Figure out how much money you can afford to spend and stick to that.
2. Buy things throughout the year when they are on sale. Some of the most frugal and careful people I know have gift boxes or gift closets where they stock up gifts throughout the year, buying things when they are on sale instead of paying full price. You can get some wonderful gifts this way, without blowing your budget.
3. Have a gift exchange, Pollyanna, or Secret Santa. If you have a large family, large group of friends, or gift inclined work place, instead of trying to buy gifts for everyone, organize an exchange where everyone buys and receives one gift.
4. Give from your abundance. If you have a lot of time, then give gift certificates for babysitting, house cleaning, or chores. If you have a talent or gift, use it to produce original gifts. Some of the best gifts I've received have been handmade quilts and paintings.
5. Remember that money doesn't equal love. Sometimes when we are trying to do right by the people we love, we think that the only way to do that is by buying them more and more expensive things. It's not. Give simple things with love and you will always be doing right.
