Having term limits on our Representatives and Senators would be devastating to our government. There are several advantages of having no term limits.

The first is that we can continue to have the most experienced people developing the laws that we are forced to live under. While I have never been a legislator, I would imagine that it takes some level of practice and experience to be able to draft and debate legislation. The more experienced people in Congress are able to create better laws which will be more beneficial for their constituents and ultimately for America.

Another advantage is that the older members of Congress can mentor and develop the skills of younger members. If the newly elected Senators and Representatives didn't have anyone to learn from, they would not be able to develop fully and become the most efficient public servant possible.

Also, limiting terms seems to punish a legislator for continued success in elections. If the candidate is good enough to be elected over and over, they are typically skilled and experienced. It is likely that they are a better choice than a newcomer. It does not make sense to force this successful person out of office because the people have voted for him or her too many times.

Finally, and in my opinion most important reason for no term limits, is that the public should have the right to elect who they want. If a potential Congressman is restricted from running because of the term limit, the people cannot choose the candidate that they truly want and democracy suffers. In a represenative democracy such as ours, the people must be able to have as much of an influence on government as possible.

In conclusion, restricting Senators and Represenatives to term limits would be disastrous. We would lose the most experienced people who lead Congress. Newcomers would not be mentored and developed to their full potential. Finally, our system of democracy would suffer because the people would not have as much freedom to choose their leaders. There should be no term limits for legislators.
