Strawberries are fun to pick, even more fun to eat, and relatively simple to freeze. All you need to do if follow a few simple steps. There's a few ways to freeze strawberries: without sugar, with sugar, or with syrup.
Packing them with syrup helps the strawberry keep their shape. Packing them with sugar helps the strawberry keep it's color and flavor. Packing them without sugar is the healthiest option.
Regardless of the method you choose, first wash the strawberries in cold water. Then follow these simple steps:
WITHOUT SUGAR
Freeze the strawberries on a single layer in a sheet pan. Once they are fully frozen you can remove them and place them in freezer container.
WITH SUGAR
Slice the strawberries in halves, then sprinkle sugar over them. About a half cup of sugar for every quart of strawberries is a good guide. Very gently stir the strawberries until the sugar is dissolved. Now pack them into a freezer container.
WITH SYRUP
You can pack these strawberries whole or in halves. Place them in a freeze container in as thin a layer as possible (try to avoid stacking if you can). Be sure to leave some space between the tops of the strawberries and the top of the container. Now cover them with syrup. Place the cover on the container and they're ready to go into the freezer.
No matter how you freeze your strawberries, if you follow a few simple steps you can be sure that they will last long and be delicious when you're ready to thaw them.
