I have just been informed that my daughter who is 19 is now pregnant. I sat full composed on hearing this information, but inside I was screaming this cannot be happening I am a twenty something trapped inside this body of a thirty plus woman I am to young to be a grandmother. I contemplated telling her all the down sides of being a mum and exaggerating some of the worst experiences that I have had to deal with, for example, flooding the bathroom by sticking toilet roll down the toilet, enticing the dog to put his through the gate and getting stuck, and describing the fire mans face when he came to cut her out, and the many trips to accident and emergency for unidentified object shoved up their nose.
As these thought passed through my head, I suddenly had a peaceful calm fall upon me, it would not be explaining these incidents to nurses, or the local fire brigade, this was my time to sit back and enjoy the pleasure of a baby in the family, taking all the good parts, and just playing a supporting role in, and lending a sympathetic ear to woes of motherhood, and now I am feeling upbeat and starting to get exited about this new member of our family.
Now I know how my mother always glowed when the grandchildren went to see her, and it was a genuine look of pleasure on her face not some pretend front I sometimes thought she would display for my benefit. I just hope I can be as wise, patient, and all knowing as my mum was.
