I personally am not against homeschooling even though I would not homeschool my own children. I don't think I'm qualified to teach them about all the subject in school and to me that is a biggest reason. I also believe that children should learn how to interact and behave in bigger groups.
Yes there is few disadvantages on public school. Not all the teachers are the greatest or even remotely qualified to teach, my children have been through some doubtful substitute teachers already. And yes some groups are too big and the individual attention is not there.
But I know from my own experience that if your child is struggling even public schools have programs to guide your child in the right track as long as you ask for it and stay actively involve with your child's progress and education. I have a son in 4th grade and he is in so called special education program, meaning that he has one-on-one time with a special ed teacher who monitor's his progress and makes sure he is catching up in the areas that he is not in normal level with other students his age. This program has been wonderful and my son is making huge progress.
In most classes he is right there with other kids and doing well but still doing extra classes about his reading fluency and some math. And all this is funded so I consider my child very lucky to have this extra help.
I also believe in children learning early on that there is regular times to go to bed and get up and you need to be responsible for yourself and considerate to others. And of course have friends and recess and playtime! If you are homeschooling who do you spend your recess time with?
I am aware that homeschooled children can join the sport activities and after school clubs and be active and have plenty friends but come on, why not join the school then to make it easier for all involved?
If you live in very rural area and it would take your child very long time to travel to the closest school I can see that the homeschooling would be a better solution. But then I would have to ask why the family chooses to live in such area? Are they really thinking about their children and giving them the best education they can?
Yes you can interact in the computer and have lesson's through the internet and all this can be very effective. I am still little stubborn and old-fashion and want my children to go to school just like I did. And my parents did. And we all got the education and chances to do what ever we wanted to and made friends for life in the school. I would not take that chance away from m child.
