The difference between an online degree program and a campus program- points and counter points.
Agreed Points:
Content of an online program should be comparable to the classroom equivalent. Accreditation standard require this to be the case.
Learners do have to demonstrate self-motivation, and an increased intrinsic drive to succeed. Less mature students who need the pressure of someone looking them in the eye and telling them what to do usually do not fare well in an online environment.
Counter Points:
Online conversations aren't only possible in the virtual classroom, they should be a fundamental component. If they aren't, then the potential student should re-consider that class or program. If the student in the virtual classroom is expected to learn in a social vacuum, then the program offerings are of inferior design and quality.
Online courses should have more personal contact with the instructor, not less. Again, if the student experience does not conform to this standard, they are experiencing an inferior program, and should consider transferring to a different institution.
Online programs are not, in and of themselves cheaper. In fact, many institutions impose a technology fee, making them slightly more expensive than their traditional counter parts. That said, if the options available are online versus a long commute, or alternative housing, then the tangential costs may make online less expensive.
Online degrees do not require less time. Credit hour for credit hour, they should be the same as their traditional counter part. Class for class, because on an active learning strategy, online courses require more time and work to complete. But again, if the on-ground alternative requires an hour commute three to fives days a week, it may turn out to be a wash.
Additional points:
As with any other educational decision, the potential online student should shop and compare before making a decision. Online education done well can be far superior in terms of retained knowledge and perceived value of the educational experience. Some institutions do online learning extraordinarily well. Others throw up some web pages, offer an online exam, and call it education. It isn't. Look for a learning model that includes a variety of learning experiences, including a large discussion component, individual assignments, and objective exams. Look for a consistently imposed course structure, and faculty who are frequently monitored and evaluated.
Many institutions are offering some courses online. Not nearly as many offer whole degrees online. Look for creative ways of taking classes from multiple institutions and transferring credits. But make sure you discuss this with a counselor first to insure transferability.
