Using your shampoo and conditioner effectively first starts with choosing the proper ones for your hair. I'm a cosmetologist and a firm believer in using only professional products. Hair care products are similar to grades of meat. Products you can buy in any store may have the same ingredients as professional products, but the quality of the ingredients varies tremendously. So always go for grade A in your hair. Professional products also won't leave the waxy buildup that other products can. Talk to your stylist to find out which type of shampoo and conditioner best suit your hair. Once you have settled on a good combination for you hair, you need to put them to work. First start by wetting down your hair, and then squeezing out excess water. I learned that you should really shampoo your hair twice. Why? Because, the first shampoo is to cleanse the outer shaft of the hair and open the cuticle. With the cuticle wide open the second shampoo will get into the hair and cleanse in and under the cuticle. So start with an appropriate amount of shampoo for your hair, depending on the length and thickness. Work into a good later, focusing your shampooing at the scalp where oil is built up, rather than the ends. Massage and stimulate the scalp. Then throughly rinse all the shampoo out and repeat. When rinsing the second time rinse until no suds are seen and again squeeze out extra water. Next, take the appropriate amount of conditioner and work into hair starting at the ends and work your way up. Again rinse throughly. A residue of conditioner can make your hair look and feel greasy. When your hair is rinsed completely, squeeze out extra water and blot hair, don't rub, with a towel to get more water out. Then style as desired.
