When it comes to diet and weight loss, the best way to go would be to make a lifelong change not a diet for a couple of months so you can fit into a bikini or wear that fancy strapless number for your girlfriend Sheila's wedding. It has to be a change that you're willing to stick with for the rest of your life. Everyone screams about the benefits of protein...PROTEIN, PROTEIN, PROTEIN! WooHoo! What people neglect to tell these desperate 'after-shots' wanna-bes is that too much protein in the body gets stored as fat. Whatever you don't burn off, sticks with you in a bad way. Sure, on the Atkin's diet you loose about 6 or 8 pounds in the first week because you've been eating tuna, eggs, chicken and bacon all day long. But try having a sandwich a few weeks later. You'll notice how little time it takes to come back on. What protein does is it acts like a catalyst for carbs to enter into the muscle and give it energy. If you think of protein grams as funnels, you eat 20 grams of 'funnels' if you will, then you eat 20 grams of carbs. Each gram has a place to go and it all gets used up. If you eat 10 grams of protein and 50 grams of carbs, the extra 40g of carbs get turned into fat (as we all know). But, if you eat 50 grams of protein and only 10 grams of carbs, the 10 grams of protein gets used up...but what about the extra 40 grams of protein? You guessed it...they get stored as fat, too. *Something to note, not all skinny people are healthy. That's a huge misconception that many people have. So the best thing for everyone is to not be too extreme on either end of the spectrum. Make your meals as colourful as possible (beige food is usually processed), be active for at least a half hour every day, watch your portions (half of your plate should be veggies) and don't forget: the longer it takes to come off, the longer it takes to come back on, the faster it comes off, the faster it comes back on...not too complicated.
