The link between eating habits and college grades
Eating habits are the way to health and strength or to disease and weakness. These habits play a vital role in the lives of college students and determine whether they have the strength and will to withstand the mental pressures of college life. The different types of eating habits vary and include food type, variety, preparation, regularity and overeating. All these eating habits will determine if a student has the energy and the will to maintain mental effort required for gaining good or excellent college grades.
The type of food eaten by people doing hard physical labor is not necessarily ideal for those whose work is mostly mental. Manual laborers need food that will fuel their muscles, but those whose work is intensely mental will not benefit from similar food. College work includes attending classes, researching and writing, studying and doing assignments. These tasks tax the mental capacities. A student will not be able to sustain the effort necessary to get good grades without eating the right types of food. The type of diet that is beneficial for one student may not be favorable for the next. For example, if one student is involved it their college's athletic program he or she will require a different diet from one who only partakes in normal school work or who does no physical work. It is then left to students to experiment with diverse foods and to eat those that give them the health and strength to fulfill their related workload without making them weak and drowsy.
Variety is the spice of life. The same food should not be eaten every day. Students tend to desire a lot of sweet food, especially those with sugar. At some colleges the same foods are served everyday. The students have a choice, but rarely choose different types of foods. They usually like certain types of foods and will, in most cases stick to their regular diets. For most students at the college level, their appetites have been trained from childhood to accept the foods they eat the most. There is little variation from the norms and therefore a lack of nutrients to support their intense mental effort.
The preparation of food is of vital importance. Preparation determines whether the life giving properties that is necessary for healthy blood, which gives energy to the various organs of the body, remains in the food or is lost during cooking. When food is prepared well it does not lose its life-giving
