In order to enhance even the dullest of foods, turn to herbs and spices. A plain chicken breast can become magnificent with the addition of oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, garlic and pepper. Not only do these Italian seasonings add zest to your food, they also provide healthful benefits. Oregano has been found to be high in antioxidants and has antibacterial qualities; garlic has been found to decrease triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pressure; rosemary has qualities that helps stop gene mutations that may lead to cancer and could help to avert damage to blood vessels minimizing the risk of heart attack; thyme is an antioxidant and has a long history of use in respiratory problems; sage is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and can be helpful in fighting rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, bronchial asthma and atherosclerosis. Black pepper aids in digestion and gas prevention, has antioxidant and antibacterial qualities and helps keep you slim by breaking down fat cells.
If you choose to indulge in hotter spices to rev up your meal, paprika, cayenne and red pepper have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These tangy spices are a wonderful addition to meats and vegetables. Turmeric contains curcumin which has anticancer qualities. Ginger can relieve the most upset stomach and helps diminish the effects of motion sickness.
On the sweeter side, cinnamon added to your morning oatmeal will turn it from bland to delicious while it lowers blood sugar, triglycerides, LDL, and total cholesterol. Peppermint has positive effects on the digestive system while licorice has anti-inflammatory effects on asthma, chest problems and mouth ulcers. Peppermint and licorice are commonly consumed as sweets or desserts but you can see the positive benefit to including them in your diet.
Not only do herbs and spices increase the sensory pleasures of your meal, they provide you with healthful advantages. Add flavor to your meals instead of calories. Turn down the herb and spice aisle of your local grocery, garden or health food store and pick up a little more flavor! Who knew eating something that tastes good is also good for you?
