Undaunted Courage's main critical point is courage and failure. Lewis and Clark discovered many important information that helped future explorers and settlers in setting up their colonies. The dangers were immense and failure was always an issue. Lewis and Clark were great men who did great things.
Lewis was sent by Jefferson to explore the new land recently obtained from the Louisiana purchase. Meriwether Lewis was Thomas Jefferson's personal secretary and was a great choice for the expedition. He and his partner, William Clark, could and would face many extreme hardships and were excellent adventurers. Lewis and Clark had much success in their travels from their adventures. They uncovered many valuable information about the animals, wildlife, plant life, and native people. They made many maps of the area and named many locations. For example porcupine river, from the incredible amount of porcupine in the area.
Lewis and Clark were very courageous, even for being successful, they still continued on in the face of all the hardships the new land threw at them. This included hostile Indians, the dryness of the great plains area as well. Still the explorers trudge on in the face of danger. They had set out to find all the things that Jefferson had requested. A water route from the pacific to the Rockies, endless amount of farming land, a river flowing from Canada to Missouri. Lewis and Clark searched far and wide for these things and when they returned home they were national heroes. Ultimately inside himself Lewis felt as if the expedition was a complete failure.
Lewis and Clark had not found a water passage from the pacific to the Rockies, he had failed at finding subtitle farming land in the great plains area also he did not find a river from Canada to Missouri which would give the U.S. no right to Canadian land. They had also the plain Indians were hostile and would disrupt settlement in Missouri. Many other failures were met along the way. From the night were 7 of their horses were stolen to when the pact between the Indians and settlers were broken.
Clark was not affected as much as Lewis. Lewis later felt depressed and developed a case of hypochondria. He succumbed to drinking and accumulated multiple debts. Tragically at the end Lewis is consumed by his failure and takes his own life. Clark and Jefferson, knowing Lewis very well, have no doubt that Lewis did kill himself and was not murder. After the event Jefferson and Clark fulfilled Lewis last request to publish his book. They hired many writers and even Clark helped out.
Lewis and Clark's story is truly a tale of courage and failure. Two men who risked it all, become legends but in the end one led a very tragic life. They knew what was in store for them but still went head on into the wilderness.
